Spatial Caves to View the Hive
The project proposes a modular system for the design of dormitories inspired by hives. The modular and adaptable characters of the system grow and develop over time in a dynamic and organic form based on the capacity of the located sites. The core of the units is made of pre-fabricated six-point frame modules. The connecting nodes form a funnel-shaped space. A Funnel offers a variety of spatial heights inside each single unit, which provides privacy and personalization for students while sharing a space. The complex is developed by vertical and horizontal installation of single units based on the form of the location site. The units are connected via multifunctional routes and steps inspired by the historical structure of step-wells. The downward route of water in the step-wells is regenerated by the presence of young active students transitioning between floors in order to develop a living staircase. The considered main project material is CLT (Cross Laminated Timber); a large-scale, prefabricate and solid-engineered wood panel that costs less, is installed faster and has more sustainability compared to materials such as concrete, masonry, or steel.
